How to avoid sin and the effects of sin is the topic for today’s post. This is the second part of a blog series I started last week. see the previous part here

I was a regular face on Sodom Street, labeled as the shabby lady who carried a cardboard sign that read “Hungry and Homeless, please help! Dirty Anna was my name until I met a lady named Esther.
It was on a Friday evening, the best time to make money on the streets. People were returning from their jobs.
The usual heavy traffic made it easy for people to notice me and my sign.
I flashed my sign towards Esther and unlike others who threw money or abuses towards me, Esther began a conversation. “Hello, how are you today”, Esther asked with a charming smile
“I’m hungry, please give me some money to get some food. ” I replied with a pitiful look. Still smiling, Esther asked me, “What’s your name?” “Anna” I replied still maintaining my pitiful look. Esther reached towards her purse, took out a fifty-dollar bill and while holding it asked me, “Do you go to church?”
Seeing the fifty-dollar bill in her hand, I was so excited. Never had I received such a large bill from a single donor. “Emmm I’m a Christian but it’s been a while since I attended church.
Esther picked a church flyer from her purse still smiling, gave it to me “Come to my church on Sunday and I’ll keep some money for you too. “Thank you so much! I’ll be there on Sunday.” I assured her with so much gratitude in my voice.
Out there that Sunday, business was not as usual. Intermittently, my mind focused on Esther. I dressed up quickly, service was to end in an hour. I joined available transit to the church, located Esther’s seat and sat at the back row.
As the pastor preached; he began to talk about how God cares for us even when we did not know he cared and how he patiently waited until we cared. I realized that I hurt God; I paid him with sin. Tears rolled down my cheecks and when the pastor called for repentance, I ran to the altar. I confessed my sins to Jesus, asked him for forgiveness and a second chance. Jesus forgave me, He took my addictions, struggles, sins and past life away. Today I am born again. I am no longer a slave to sin; I am free, joyful and living a fulfilled life in Christ

When Jesus died on the cross, he paid the price and gave us dominion over sin. The reason most people live and suffer in sin is because they lack knowledge and the spirit of God (Hosea 4:6). It is very important to avoid sin because the devil uses sin to enslave souls. For example, most of the drunkards I have met started drinking due to peer pressure and harsh living conditions. They wish to stop but cannot stop because they have been enslaved by the devil through addiction. People like this need the help of God to break the bondage of addiction. This can only be achieved by receiving Jesus Christ.

Accept Jesus Christ

Become a child of God by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior. When you become born again, the spirit of God dwells in you. As a result, you cannot have an active relationship with the devil. When you accept Jesus, you become his responsibility; Jesus guides and sustains you. (John 1:12)

Know your identity in Christ

We are created in the image of God; holy, royal, able to obtain mercy and power (I Peter 2: 9-10). He has also given us His name, Jesus Christ; that as you mention that name, every knee must bow and acknowledge that he is God. It’s a shame that most people do not know who they are, they don’t know their stand and cannot access the power God has given to them. When you are ignorant of your rights, the devil entraps you through sin.

Focus on living righteous and be persistent

Do not be so engulfed with pointing out sinners and pretending to be a saint (Matthew 7:5). Instead, focus on how to be a perfect Christian. Be fervent in prayer, study the word, win souls for Christ, help your neighbors, make godly friends, display the fruits of the spirit, build your character, etc.
When you focus on good Christian living, sin will automatically be deleted from your life. Do it nonstop because continuation brings freedom.

Stay away from worldliness and carnal things

Do not give in to ways of the world. Don’t indulge in worldly things that do not glorify God. We are the light of the world and shouldn’t engage in the activities of the devil and his cohorts. Examples are of such activities include; Halloween, clubbing, drinking, smoking, swearing, indecent dressing, etc. How do we impact or teach the world when we engage in their activities like clubbing, drinking, swearing, gossip, etc.
None of these worldly devices gives glory to God. These are channels the devil uses to entrap us through sin.

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions.

These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

1 JOHN 2:15-17 NLT
Overcoming Temptations

Temptations will always come and the ability to recognize, trust God and fight is what makes a strong Christian. If Jesus Christ who was free of sin was tempted by the devil, how much more you and I (Matthew 4:1-11).
Temptations vary, true Christians will suffer temptation but one with Jesus will always be on the winning side (2 Timothy 3:10-13). The devil preys on idle minds so stay steadfast in the Lord.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

I listened to the testimony of a young lady who gave her life to Christ. During her study period in the university, she tried to kill her classmate through witchcraft. She failed and couldn’t kill her classmate because she was an active Christian, free of sin.
She planned to make her classmate sin against God so she could gain access to her. This lady succeeded in getting her classmate angry then killed her.

  • From the story, we can understand that sin opens a door for the devil to afflict children of God.
  • Sin leads to both physical and spiritual death; it destroys our relationship with God. Giving the devil and his agent’s access to you. (James 1:14-16)
  • Sin hinders progress; when God releases blessings, the devil siphons, because you have given him power over your life through sin. Most people complain of how the make a lot of money and have nothing to show, in most cases, it is caused by the devil.
  • Most importantly, sin denies us from making heaven. This is Satan’s mandate on earth. Because he can’t make heaven, he wants to end in hell with everyone. Don’t let the devil drag you to hell. Make heaven and be joyful.

In conclusion, Sin is one of the greatest tool the devil uses to operate most especially with believers. Repent; confess your sins, amend your ways, and say no to the devil’s tricks. Live right! Choose Jesus Christ today and get eternal life

If you want to make Jesus Christ the lord of your life and break away from the power of sin, say the prayer below.

Heavenly Father, I confess and repent of known and unknown sins today (confess your sins). Jesus Christ, I surrender my life to you. Come into my life and be my Lord and personal savior. Thank you for your mercy. I ask that you teach me, guide my paths and preserve me for heaven at last. In Jesus name. Thank you Jesus.

Congratulations! Now that you’re saved, please find a bible believing church to continue this process and maintain your salvation.

If you received Christ today or you have personal questions, email at favouredogo1@gmail.com.
There is a third part to this post. God willing, next week Saturday, we will study the act of repentance. In the meantime, I encourage you to give your life to Christ, guard your doors from the devil and ask God to help you overcome sin. Remember, Jesus is coming soon.
